The goldfish (Carassius auratus) is one of the world's most popular ornamental fish, kept in tanks and ponds for over a thousand years.
- It comes from East Asia and was selectively bred from wild carp into many colours (gold, orange, red, white, black, calico) and body shapes (single-tail types such as Common, Comet and Shubunkin, and fancy double-tail types such as Ryukin, Oranda and Ranchu).
- It is often sold as an easy beginner fish, but it grows large, produces a lot of waste and needs a roomy tank, strong filtration and regular water changes.
- Goldfish are coldwater fish that do best at about 18–24°C.
- In Tamil Nadu, tap and tank water is often warmer, so keep them in shade with good aeration and avoid direct sun.
- With good care they commonly live 10–15 years, and some reach 20–30 years or more.
- Never release goldfish into rivers, lakes or tanks, because they are not native to India.
How to recognise it
- Goldfish display extraordinary variation due to selective breeding.
- Body shape ranges from torpedo-shaped common goldfish to egg-shaped fancy varieties.
- Colours include gold, orange, red, white, black, blue, chocolate, calico (multi-colour), and metallic or matte scales.
- Common single-tail varieties have streamlined bodies and a single caudal fin.
- Fancy varieties include: Oranda (wen or fleshy head growth), Ranchu (no dorsal fin, rounded back), Ryukin (tall, humped back), Fantail (double tail), Telescope (protruding eyes), Pearlscale (domed scales), Lionhead (prominent head growth, no dorsal fin), and Bubble Eye (fluid-filled sacs under eyes).
- Males develop white breeding tubercles (small bumps) on gill covers and the leading rays of the pectoral fins during breeding season
- females become rounder when carrying eggs
- Size varies: common goldfish grow largest (15–30 cm), fancy varieties smaller (10–20 cm).
